Whole Wheat Pizza Dough (Bread Machine)

Home-made pizza is easier to make than you think, especially if you have a bread machine 😉

I have been making this recipe for years and it is always a hit. We like our pizza thin, so for us this recipe yields three 12″ pizza crusts. If you prefer your pizza thicker, split your recipe into two dough balls for two pizza crusts. You can definitely make this recipe using all-purpose or unbleached flour, or a combo of white and whole wheat, but we like it 100% whole wheat 😉

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 c. lukewarm water
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 2/3 c. whole wheat flour
  • 1 1⁄4 tsp yeast (for bread machine) Non-stick spray

METHOD

  • Add ingredients into machine in order given
  • Choose “Dough” setting. Start machine.

Use dough in your favourite pizza recipe, or try this one below:

To make pizza:

  • Split dough into two balls (or three, if you are going for a thin crust)
  • Place each ball onto the centre of a pizza stone, pizza pan or cookie sheet
  • slowly and gently, stretch the dough away from the centre of the sheet towards the edges of the cookie sheet, stretching only a little bit at a time until you have reached the edges of your pan/stone.
  • Pinch any tears, or if necessary, patch with a tiny piece of excess dough
  • If you are having trouble hand-stretching your dough, you can roll it out with a rolling pin, but I highly recommend hand-stretching for the best results!
  • Top with your favorite toppings & bake at 425° until toppings are cooked to your taste & edges are crispy & golden brown.
  • If you have a 3 lb bread maker, this recipe can be doubled to yield 4 regular or 6 thin pizza crusts
  • Dough can be frozen. Thaw completely before stretching it out.  Dough may need to be floured slightly as it may be slightly stickier coming out of the freezer.

Note: I discovered these pizza pans last year and I absolutely LOVE them. I stretch the dough right onto the pan (no spraying required).  The dough bakes through beautifully and forms a crispy crust. You can definitely find similar pans elsewhere I do NOT recommend slicing your pizza on the pan as it will dent and scratch- I recommend slicing your pizza using a pizza slicer on a chopping board. I am including the amazon link but at the time, I found them at Dollarama- I believe they are still available at about $4 each.

I hope you love pizza night! Please tag me @montreal_mom #pizzanight in your Instagram and FB pizza night photos!

Buon appetito!
