Time to Visit the Sugar Shack!

Here in Quebec, we are fortunate to enjoy the ‘real’ maple syrup experience- seeing how the trees are tapped and enjoying “la tire” – sweet, delicious, maple syrup ‘taffy’ cooled on a bed of snow.

Well, sugar shack season is well underway and is expected to last until the 3rd or 4th week of April.

Visiting the sugar shack is a fun experience for families living in Montreal as well as for tourists.  There are many options to choose from.  Most sugar shacks offer the whole “sugaring off” experience complete with meal & entertainment.  Many families with small children are just seeking the “maple taffy on snow” experience.  It is best to call ahead for the following reasons:

  • To verify if the sugar shack offers the experience you are seeking,
  • For various people who have dietary restrictions, many sugar shacks have pork drippings in the maple syrup.  If this is of concern to you, you will want to verify ahead of time,
  • Many sugar shacks require reservations, you don’t want to drive out to be turned away.

We visited La Famille Constantin a few years ago and enjoyed our experience. Here’s a list of  a few different sugar shacks around the Montreal area:

I remember as a child enjoying taffy on the snow. It was something to look forward to after a fresh covering of snow had fallen!
